Getting to the Bar is a huge achievement in itself but then come the challenges of building a successful practice. The panel of speakers will share guidance on how to generate work and sustain a successful practice at the Bar, as well as how to progress wishing the profession.


Naeem Mian QC

Award-winning barrister, Naeem Mian QC is widely regarded as one of the leading and most versatile defence barristers practising today. He is consistently and independently cited by Chambers UK and Legal 500 as a Tier 1 Silk.

Naeem is regularly instructed in cases of multi-defendant murder involving background allegations of gang membership, revenge attacks, shooting, kidnap and major drug related offences. Examples of such recent cases include R v Edusi & Others (client acquitted of murder), R v Ghilani & Others (cut-throat defence advanced by co-defendants. Client acquitted of murder), R v Dodd & Others (cut-throat defence advanced by co-defendants. Client acquitted of murder), R v Nwogbe & Others (acquitted of murder).

Naeem has been involved in most of the major, high profile terrorism related cases in the UK.  To date, he has been instructed on in excess of 50 such cases. Some of his landmark cases include securing the acquittal of one of three men charged in connection with the 7/7 London Underground bombings (R v Saleem & Others); securing the acquittal of a defendant charged with planning a bombing campaign on the UK mainland (R v Hussain); securing the acquittal of a defendant alleged to be making his way to fight in Syria (R v Diini & Others); the acquittal of a defendant dubbed the “Jihottie” charged with funding terrorism abroad (R v Nawal Msaad); and being instructed in the first ever terrorism trial to be heard in secret (R v AB).

Sultana Tafadar

Sultana is a highly experienced human rights, international law and criminal justice barrister, practising at No 5 Chambers. She acts in high profile counter terrorism and national security cases, often involving cutting edge law and highly sensitive secret material. Sultana also advises large multi-national corporations on regulatory and Diversity & Equality matters.

She is part of the Organisation of Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Roster of Criminal Justice Sector Experts dealing with Counter-Terrorism; and the Head of the Working Group on Counter Terrorism and National Security for MLAG. She is currently the Chair of Oxford Advocates on Human Rights; Special Advisor on Human Rights to the Oxford Initiative for Global Ethics and Human Rights; Member of the Legal Expert Advisory Panel for Fair Trials International; Member of the International Legal Network of Avocat Sans Frontieres; Member of the Detention ExPEERience of Avocat Sans Frontieres; and Founder of the Muslim Lawyers Action Group.

Saleema Mahmood

Saleema is a barrister of 22 years at No5 Chambers. Her practice area is a crime and predominantly defence. Specialising in Violent and sexual offences. Saleema has appeared on a number of radio and television programmes including Raising the Bar on Radio 4 and ITV’s Crime Stories. From a working class background raised in Yorkshire but now living in the Midlands. And she is a mum to 5 children
